Tech Tips for Non-Techies.

Why Backups Should Be Your Best Friend

Your phone is blinking “low storage” again. Photos won’t save, apps keep freezing, and you’re now debating whether to delete WhatsApp or Pinterest just to make room for that one voice note your friend insists on sending every morning.

I remember those days clearly — my good old iPhone X with 64GB (which felt more like 16GB with the way data piles up). There were weeks I couldn’t open WhatsApp because my storage was crying for help. And don’t even get me started on trying to update apps or take videos. If you know, you know.

But you know what would’ve saved me? Backups. Regular backups.

We underestimate how much digital stuff we accumulate daily — photos, PDFs, screenshots of things we might use someday, and those 6-hour voice notes from group chats. It all adds up. The good news? Backing up your data doesn’t have to be complicated.

Here’s how to back up your data like a pro (even if you’re not a techie):

1. iPhone (Using iCloud and Google Drive):

  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup
  • Toggle ON iCloud Backup, then tap Back Up Now
  • For files/photos to Google Drive:
    • Download Google Drive app
    • Open the app, tap the + button, select Upload, then choose your files

2. Android (Using Google Backup):

  • Go to Settings > Google > Backup
  • Turn ON Backup by Google One
  • Tap Back up now

3. Laptop/Desktop (Using Google Drive or External Hard Drive):

  • Install Google Drive for Desktop
  • Sign in and sync your preferred folders
  • Or, manually copy important files to a flash drive or external hard disk

Why This Matters:

  • You save space on your phone/laptop
  • You never lose important documents, contacts, or memories
  • You can access your files from anywhere
  • And most importantly: You avoid the panic that comes with a broken, stolen, or suddenly dead device.

Being tech-savvy isn’t about knowing how to code or understanding the backend of a website. Sometimes, it’s simply about knowing where your photos are saved and being able to breathe easy when your phone decides to misbehave.

So go ahead — back it up today. Your future self will thank you.
