Title: Simple Ways to Stay Safe Online.
I barely had 3,000 followers and was with a second-hand iPhone…
So you can imagine my shock when someone tried to hack all my social media accounts, at once.
I wasn’t an influencer… Just a regular Nigerian girl posting her pictures and videos, on good days.
But that didn’t matter.
So, if you’ve ever said, “Abeg, what’s my own with cybersecurity?” — this post is for you. Because if you’re reading this, you’re already online, and that’s all it takes to be a target.
5 Simple Ways to Stay Safe Online
1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
No, 123456 and password are not secure. Use a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols, like PassWord_123. Tools like LastPass or Bitwarden can also help you manage and generate passwords securely.
2. Turn On Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
This is like putting a second lock on your door. Even if someone guesses your password, they still need your phone/email/code to get in.
3. Don’t Click Suspicious Links
If it says “Click here to claim your reward” or “Verify your account” — pause. Check the email address or website. If unsure, don’t click. Phishing is real and deadly.
4. Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Sensitive Transactions
You can scroll Instagram at the airport, but don’t log into your bank account on free Wi-Fi. If you must, use a VPN.
5. Update Your Apps and Devices Regularly
Those updates aren’t just for fun new emojis😂😜. They fix security holes hackers could exploit.
Remember:
Cybersecurity isn’t about paranoia — it’s about being aware. Think of it like locking your car. You don’t expect someone to steal it, but you lock it anyway.
You deserve to feel safe online, and it starts with these small steps.
