The Gift of Ordinary Days

A big friend once told me that life is like a movie…

…you only see the thrilling parts in the trailers and adverts. And so is life.

Nobody posts the bad days on social media. Well… except some Gen Z content creators sha, but you get my point 😂.

We like to spotlight the big days—birthdays, weddings, job offers, travel trips. But if we’re honest, life is not mostly birthdays or weddings. Life is mostly Mondays. Ordinary, unfiltered Tuesdays. Boring Wednesdays. Almost-running-mad Thursdays. A Friday to breathe a little. A house-chore choking Saturday. And finally, a Sunday that reminds you that the next day is Monday😁.

Lately, I have come to realize that the “big” moments aren’t what shape us the most. It’s the string of ordinary days in between—the ones that don’t look like much, but quietly add up to who we are becoming.

Think about it. That degree wasn’t really about graduation day. It was about all those evenings of headache, chained lectures, and carrying course handouts like a Bible.🤣

Marriage isn’t just the wedding day (so please, let the singles breathe 😂). It’s the countless days of talking, forgiving, fighting, praying, and adjusting toothpaste habits.😃

Even spiritual growth doesn’t usually come in a thunderbolt. It’s in small obediences: choosing to pray when you don’t feel like it, saying “sorry” when your pride is shouting louder, resisting the urge to clap back in that church WhatsApp group.

And sometimes, the ordinary days surprise us. One random Tuesday morning, I was waiting for a keke to go to work. That very junction makes me wake up with “God abeg”—the rush and push to get a vehicle is pure survival of the fittest. Then a school bus drove by, and a pretty little girl inside started waving and smiling. I turned to see who she was greeting. Nobody! It was me. She kept waving until I smiled and waved back. That little moment made my whole day, my whole week—and it’s been months, but I still think about it. Nobody announced it on the news, but to me, it was breathtaking.😍

Here’s the thing: if we spend all our energy waiting for the “big” days, we’ll miss the quiet beauty of the ordinary ones. The hug that wasn’t planned. The “good morning” text that landed just when you needed it. The egg that fried perfectly without sticking to the pan (a true miracle 😂).

Maybe the gift of ordinary days is this: they remind us life isn’t always about fireworks. Sometimes it’s about the slow burn, the unnoticed grace that keeps carrying us forward.

Because one day, we’ll look back and realize those little Tuesdays were the big days all along.

So, before you scroll past today as “nothing special,” pause. Look again. Breathe in. You’re already living in the gift.

What’s one “ordinary day” memory that still makes you smile?
Share it in the comments, I’d love to hear your little big moments too. 💙

  1. You’re right. Life isn’t just about the big, moments. It’s the ordinary, everyday experiences that often shape us the most. Those moments might not be Instagram-worthy, but they’re what make life rich and meaningful.

One ordinary day that still makes me smile is a lazy Sunday afternoon spent with my family. We were all in the living room eating from the sumptuous delicacy my sister had prepared. My dad shared stories of his own childhood Sundays, spent with his family in a similar way. The laughter, the food, and the warmth of being together, it was a simple, yet profound moment that felt like a big deal in its own way. Even now, thinking about it brings back the feeling of contentment and love.

    1. Wow! Thank you so much for sharing this. This reminds me too of similar Sundays at home. My dad is a born storyteller 😂😂. I think all dads are😂

  2. …one of those ordinary days I still cherish with a profound personally serene feeling was a time out in a sand-less beach⛱️.

Short but had it all… meaningful conversation, washing people do diff stuffs that made them feel relaxed & loved, …nature, experiencing the sunset 🌇 and of course, …snacking with what our search found – how be it¡ plus big smiles.

    Wow!
    Just wow!
‘… if we spend all our energy waiting for the “big” days, we’ll miss the quiet beauty of the ordinary ones.’

Who would’ve thought that a simple smile, an innocent hug, and the things we regard so less are the pieces that complete a whole puzzle called life?

Truth is, at some point in life, I really looked out for the “big moments.” I waited, hoped, and dreamed about it. Moments wey I go just hammer…!🤣
But I got to realise that big days don’t just happen. They are built in the ordinary days.

Now, I’m learning to appreciate the gift of boring Mondays and ordinary Tuesdays.

    Thank you for sharing.

    1. True😂😀

Big days don’t just happen, they are built in the ordinary ones…
Thank you for sharing this, and I hope you learn to celebrate every day as the “D” day😀🙏
